How much power does a portable solar panel actually produce per day?
Less than the label — and that's normal. Rated watts are lab figures; in real sun a monocrystalline panel through an MPPT input delivers about 75–85% of its rating. The quick formula is rated watts × peak sun hours × ~0.8, so a 100W panel at 4 peak sun hours makes roughly 320 Wh/day. Heat, panel angle, cable length, and cloud cover all trim that further.
Do portable solar panels work on cloudy days or in winter?
Yes, but output drops sharply. Expect roughly 10–30% of rated output under heavy overcast, with monocrystalline cells handling low light better than polycrystalline. Cold itself is fine — panels are slightly more efficient when cool — but short winter days and low sun angles cut total watt-hours. In cloudy regions, size up a tier or plan a wall-outlet top-up.
Do I need a charge controller with a portable solar panel?
Only when charging a bare battery, not a power station. Portable power stations have a built-in MPPT controller, so you just plug the panel in. A standalone 12V battery (AGM, lead-acid, or LiFePO4) needs a separate controller to prevent overcharge and night-time drain — MPPT for 50W+ or lithium, a basic PWM for small trickle setups.
What connector do I need to charge an EcoFlow, Jackery, or Bluetti power station?
Check the station's solar input before you buy. EcoFlow uses XT60/XT60i, Jackery uses DC8020 or DC7909, Bluetti uses an aviation or T-style plug depending on model, and Anker SOLIX uses XT60. Many panels output MC4, so you'll often need an MC4-to-brand adapter cable. Confirm the panel's voltage also falls inside your station's solar input range.
Foldable vs rigid solar panels — which should I choose?
Foldable for portability, rigid for permanent setups. Foldable and blanket panels pack small and deploy on a kickstand for camping, RVs, and power-station charging. Rigid framed panels are cheaper per watt and built for fixed roof or mounted installs, but they're bulky to carry. Most campers and van-lifers want foldable; off-grid roof arrays want rigid.
What does the IP rating (IP65, IP67, IP68) mean on a solar panel?
It tells you how much water and dust the panel survives. IP65 resists rain and spray from any direction — fine for most camping. IP67 handles brief submersion, better for exposed or wet setups. IP68 is fully waterproof. The first digit (6) means dust-tight. Look for a certified rating, not a vague waterproof claim, and protect the connectors regardless.
Can I connect two solar panels together for more power?
Yes — in series or parallel, within your controller's limits. Series adds voltage (useful for reaching a station's minimum input); parallel adds current while keeping voltage steady. Always stay under your power station or charge controller's maximum input voltage and watts. Two matched 100W panels can roughly double daily output — just check connectors and use a Y-branch or combiner cable.
