How do portable solar panels work?
A portable solar panel converts sunlight into DC electricity, which flows through a charge controller into a battery or straight into a power station that has one built in. You point the panel at the sun, plug it into your station or a 12V battery via a compatible cable, and it tops up your storage during daylight. The panel makes power only while the sun is on it, so a battery or power station stores it for when you need it.
How many watts of solar do I actually need?
Add up the watt-hours you use in a day, then divide by your peak sun hours and a real-world factor of about 0.7-0.85. As a rough guide, 100W suits phones, lights, and topping a small power station; 200W recharges a mid-size station or runs a 12V fridge; 400W or more is for large stations, RV banks, or fast full recharges. Do portable solar panels need a charge controller?
It depends on what you charge. A portable power station has an MPPT charge controller built in, so you plug the panel straight in with no extra hardware. If you charge a bare 12V battery, you need a separate controller between the panel and battery to protect it - an MPPT for the best harvest, or a basic PWM for small voltage-matched setups.
Does a solar panel really produce its rated wattage?
Rarely the full number. Rated watts are measured in lab conditions, so in the real world a panel typically delivers about 70-85% of its rating on a clear day, and less in heat, haze, shade, or off-angle sun.
