Size a solar battery maintainer around daily demand

2 min read

Table of Contents

Battery capacity alone does not determine the required maintainer size. The practical question is whether useful energy reaching the battery can offset storage loss and any equipment that remains active. A nameplate wattage cannot answer that without exposure assumptions.

Make the units explicit

Illustrative load: 0.020 A × 12 V × 24 h = 5.76 Wh/day. This is a hypothetical constant load, not a measurement of any reviewed vehicle. Battery self-discharge and other losses remain additional requirements.

Now model the source conservatively

For illustration only, a nominal 5W panel with two equivalent full-output hours and an assumed 50% net delivery factor supplies 5 Wh/day. That falls below the example load before other requirements. With four such hours, the same assumptions produce 10 Wh/day. These are arithmetic scenarios, not a forecast or a recommended universal derating factor.

The unknowns that change the answer

Input Do not substitute
Parked consumption A guess based on vehicle age
Useful solar exposure All daylight hours at rated output
Charging losses and controller behavior An unloaded panel-voltage reading
Battery condition A large amp-hour label as proof of health

Compare sizes after the requirement exists

A 5W, 10W or 20W unit may be relevant, but none is universally correct for a car, boat or motorcycle. The POWOXI owner material includes winter shortfalls; SUNAPEX feedback distinguishes trailer storage from camping demand. Those are reasons to model the actual job, not adopt an anecdotal wattage rule.

Get measurements without improvising electrical tests

Vehicle sleep behavior and battery measurements may require model-specific procedures. Ask a qualified technician when uncertain; do not insert a meter into an unknown circuit based on a generic online recipe.

A positive daily balance is the starting point, not the final approval

Use measured or professionally assessed demand and conservative site assumptions, then confirm that the exact controller and connection suit the battery. If the result depends on perfect weather every day, plan a fallback rather than declaring the smallest calculated panel sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can battery amp-hours alone tell me which panel to buy?

No. You also need the parked demand, useful exposure and charging-system requirements. A larger battery can delay a problem without correcting a daily energy deficit.

Are two full-output hours the same as two hours of daylight?

No. Equivalent full-output hours describe an energy assumption. A daylight hour can include shading, weak sun or other conditions that reduce output.

Is the example 50% delivery factor a recommendation?

No. It is an explicitly hypothetical arithmetic assumption. Use appropriate site and equipment data for a real calculation.
